The Memorial Bell of Mereyon was constructed by the survivors and the bereaved family to calm the souls of the dead.
When a memorial service for the soldiers who had died in the island was held, Mrs. Kazue Kiyono was one of the attendants.
Her words are written in the book “Half-century of reposing of souls” by Kiyojiro Imano, page 289.
“When we visited the island and were singing the song ‘The Bell of Mereyon’, I saw numerous soldiers in the right side of the monument. They walked toward us, straightening their position, forming an orderly line. I thought I had clearly seen the figures of my husband and his young friend in the line.”
